Maintenance of a 200 year old graveyard is a continuous challenge. This is an example of work in progress.
Here were five markers of the same size and once perfectly leveled and aligned with each other. The last names on them are McAndrew, Lynch, Ferguson, and McKenny. Over time, they had settled unevenly and become skewed and misaligned. Now, under the direction of Basilica Director of Operations, Bruce Haas, new foundations have been laid and the markers will once again be perfectly aligned and leveled.
In the upper right corner of this photo there is an original, now sloping a bit to the right. So, the look of these rebuilt markers will closely match the original.
How is the maintenance managed for the St Peters Cemetary at Elmwood?
That cemetery is the responsibility of The Diocese of Charleston, Charleston, SC.
