I believe I can confidently nominate The Graveyard at the Basilica of St. Peter as one of the most beautiful and well cared for 200 year old graveyards in South Carolina. It is small, but it takes a lot of work to keep everything clean and in good condition and keep the grass growing. We owe the good results to the Basilica Director of Operations. He wouldn’t want me to publish his name here, but, if you are interested, you will find his picture among the staff photos on our website, fourth row down on the right.
Grave marker repairs are sometimes required. Below is a photo of a badly damaged marker, that of Rev. Thomas Augustine Flynn. You can read about Rev. Flynn here and see a picture of his marker before it was damaged.
This shot shows the damaged foundation in the background and the stone removed and reassembled in the foreground.
And here it is as of October 22, 2022, the marker repaired and remounted on the new foundation.
And, by the way, don’t hesitate to come take a stroll through the graveyard after Mass or any other time during the week. You won’t get muddy shoes strolling through this thick and beautiful grass.
Thank you, Bruce.
